Key Assessment 2

1.     The Times newspaper is more formal and tend to have a more upper-class audience. The time is a right-wing newspaper so it is more in favour towards to the conservative. However, it is overall tires to not be bias towards any party. Whereas the Daily Mirror is more informal, the target audience tend to be working class. It is a left-wing newspaper therefore it is more in favour towards the labour party. The Mirror in difference to the Times is more like a tabloid and report soft news, whilst the Times are more like report to hard news. The Daily Mirror’s layout has more picture than text, and include things such as puns and bright colours. Which differs to the times which would include more text and smaller pictures which reflect their seriousness of the news. The Daily Mirror is more likely to report pop news as well. For example, the Mirror’s report on Theresa May, the Headline included a pun, ‘Mayhem’ and they also include an unflattering image of May where she had her head down and bowing down, which suggested she was giving up. Which worked in their favour as May came across as weak and the public are likely to create a negative image of her. This is different to how the Times represented her. The ideology of the Mirror is to make the newspaper more fun for the public and making it more understandable, the Times on the other hand is a more serious and stricter newspaper.
2.     Conglomeration- When a company/business has ownership over multiple of tiny companies and creates this empire
3.     With conglomeration is limits creativity, as they will all have the same ideology. It Limits smaller business to produce their own work it cancels the originality that they might have. If a business has multiple of tiny companies they will soon buy pretty much all of the businesses, although it does cancel out competition they might not everything about the style/ context of the business and may make a wrong choice, which will not attract the audience
4.     The regulations of the Newspaper have been pretty much ineffective. In the 90s, it has been proven that newspaper reports have been listening to people’s voicemail, trying to get a story. Which is violation of privacy and is illegal however the newspaper has still published the story. Then after this scandal where the reports were being caught. There a new rule put in place for nothing like to this to happen again and regulations reporters have to follow IPSO. But it still remains effective. For example, the rules say if the newspaper wants to report suicide they shouldn’t name the way it was done. When the Creator of a TV show died the newspaper still named the Method it was done, even though it was again the regulations which was made to protect the public from doing it. Another Example, is race hate the regulations state that if the race of the person genuinely is related to the story then the reporters are allowed to mention it. Again, this rule was broken there was a story about rapist who was Indonesian however isn’t related to the story itself there was no need to mention the race. This creates negative connotations with Indonesians.  Even though, there are new rules and regulations for newspaper there are not being followed. Which deflects their purpose and show that they are ineffective, but those regulations were made so there aren’t any stories that controversial stories. In conclusion, IPSO should be stricter with what the newspapers get to publish, for example the suicide regulation is to protect the public.
