Les Revenants - first 5 mins

  • Conventions of the supernatural genre- opening in an isolated area. Costumes are causal attire which gives a strong sense of normality. The narrative the main character goes into a new environment/ setting in hope. Orchestral music empathetic sound to suit the fear of the character.
  • Tracking shot of Camille, as well as the high establishing shot of her, alienates her.
  • Slow-motion of butterfly breaking out of its case - connects a sense of mystery and drama - foreshadowing main plot point. As when the butterfly passes Mr Costa's wife there's a knock on the door.
  • Tracking shot of Camille - tragic head movement acts as a proairetic code signifies that she is looking for something close up shot connects as a sense of uncertainty- heightened sense of anxiety.
  • Tracking shots are slow paces (Mr costa house) moving through the house - creates tension and suspense - audience not knowing what to expect.
  • Camille on the bus connects a sense of cinema character who you have no knowledge about looking longingly out the window
  • Lighting starts as more a blue tone but descends into more yellow tones - reflects her sense of being on a journey. Low key it shadows dusky mise en scene
  • Blue lighting conventional of sci-fi hybridity etc
  • being visually dark provides and anchorage for how the audience should feel and builds tension that adds to the genre conventions of horror
