some examples of different genres:

  • drama- Lena, Camille and the boy, perhaps love triangle? 
  • Intertextual reference to horror with the creepy lost child. 
  • drama -  Lena and Camille's dad is stood at a distance 
  • drama- maybe a feud between Pierre and Lena's dad  
  • french- age of consent 
  • french- mount alps in the opening and ending shot 
  • thriller- opening credit of random unsettling  shots like a deer in the water, hand on the class 
  • thriller/supernatural- the butterfly breaking from the picture frame, which could be a representation of the dead coming to life 
  • thriller- when Mr costa walks down the corridor there's suspense music which indicates something terrible is about to occur. However, it subverts the audience expectations as there's just a lady eating. 
  • horror- the waitress getting stabbed in the alleyway 
  • horror- adele's scene with when her old 'lover' returns and she assumes it's all in her head 
  • supernatural- all people that have returned are extremely hungry and have no memory of what had happened 
  • mystery- it is very unclear and requires the audience to focus as it connects in the end. As well there isn't really an explanation for what is happening. 
  • thriller- the fire scene in Mr costa's house the lack of dialogue puts the audience in an uncomfortable situation.

Analysis of a chosen scene

 Task  1. List the Media Language (mise-en-scene, editing, Cinematography etc.) that constructs meaning in the scene 2. Identify the preferred reading and the dominant ideology of the scene (e.g. 'a deliberately confusing and distressing ideology that positions the audience uncomfortably') 3. Identify the possible negotiated readings and oppositional reading- how is the audience being positioned?  Claire's reaction to Camille returning (11:45- 14:40) The scene starts with the frame focusing on the back of Claire's head, after seeing Camille in her house. This is a hermeneutic code as the audience are left to wonder what Claire's reaction is. The suspense is further anchored through the hallow unsettling music.  There are various moments within this scene where Claire changes her pace dramatically in seconds which may position the audience in an unnerving situation.
