What Media language is associated with this product and how does it create multiple meaning? 

genre: Drama, Horror, Thriller 

Unconventional for a Tv set as the genre is difficult to define. And is subversive and is a hybrid. Whereas, Human's genre is less confusing. However there are challenging ideology explored within the show.

Media language is used a communication tool used by the producers to communicate a message to the audience. It is encoded within the product. Producers convey their ideologies through media language and meaning to the audience.

  • Butterfly breaking out of the case foreshadow the motif of the show - dead coming back to life (hermeneutic code). Its symbolic. Life - death. Breaking Free- Freedom. 
  • conventional - supernatural genre- explores death 
  • slow tracking builds tension reinforced through the mellow non- diegetic sound 
  • establishing shot - highway- key location. Pans out to the Alps- deserted location conventional to horror. Iconography - foreign location. Simplistic shot  with empty frames
  • mid shot of Camille for a long duration separates her from the other characters and suggests tot he audience that she is the main character so they focus their attention to her.
  • Mise-en-scene of colour - blue tint- symbolic of  the dark, mysterious essences of the show. 
  • The non-diegetic sound is conventional to the drama genre

  • Similarly also features a binary opposition - diegetic music that the staff is listening to vs the unsettling silence within the room

Analysis of a chosen scene

 Task  1. List the Media Language (mise-en-scene, editing, Cinematography etc.) that constructs meaning in the scene 2. Identify the preferred reading and the dominant ideology of the scene (e.g. 'a deliberately confusing and distressing ideology that positions the audience uncomfortably') 3. Identify the possible negotiated readings and oppositional reading- how is the audience being positioned?  Claire's reaction to Camille returning (11:45- 14:40) The scene starts with the frame focusing on the back of Claire's head, after seeing Camille in her house. This is a hermeneutic code as the audience are left to wonder what Claire's reaction is. The suspense is further anchored through the hallow unsettling music.  There are various moments within this scene where Claire changes her pace dramatically in seconds which may position the audience in an unnerving situation.
