Comparing the representation of gender in Adbusters (2016) and Woman (1964)

How have the representations in the magazines you have studied been shaped by sociohistorical and cultural circumstances?

  • Breeze's advert has the women as the main focus and the picture is large
  • model's makeup and hair is done
  • there's no colour in magazine. it's in black& white
  • close up shot adbusters
  • image top left
  • mid shot of women in bath advert
  • mise-en-scene of naked body
  • high-angle close up of tap
  • breeze advert has unrealistically lexis
  • prone skin suggest she has been in the bath for ages

While Woman magazine presents a singular and sexist representation of women, Adbusters presents a complicated and atypical representation of gender, which is highly appropriate to it's genre and ideology. For example, the aesthetic of women's magazine is more glamorous and is an unrealistic representation. The mise-en-scene of her makeup and hair being done makes her look more attractive to look at, this uses the theory of the male gaze to sell the product and make money out of the advert. Whereas the adbusters' representation of a women in a bath is more realistic and is more natural. For instance the photo includes a background and has a setting unlike the Breeze advert. As well as this the close up of the model's prone hands suggest that she has been in the water.
