Analysis of a chosen scene

Task  1. List the Media Language (mise-en-scene, editing, Cinematography etc.) that constructs meaning in the scene 2. Identify the preferred reading and the dominant ideology of the scene (e.g. 'a deliberately confusing and distressing ideology that positions the audience uncomfortably') 3. Identify the possible negotiated readings and oppositional reading- how is the audience being positioned?  Claire's reaction to Camille returning (11:45- 14:40) The scene starts with the frame focusing on the back of Claire's head, after seeing Camille in her house. This is a hermeneutic code as the audience are left to wonder what Claire's reaction is. The suspense is further anchored through the hallow unsettling music.  There are various moments within this scene where Claire changes her pace dramatically in seconds which may position the audience in an unnerving situation. As they feel alert and placed in a way through the cinematography as if they are there. Some of the sc...

Les Revenants - Audience

An audience is a group of people that consume a media product. Before it was thought that the audience was largely passive, they would accept the ideologies that the producer present to them. Now it is thought the audience are more opinionated. Stuart Hall says that there are three different 'types' of reading: The preferred reading, Negotiable reading, and the opposition reading.  Similar to what Stuart Hall speaks about, David Gauntlett talks about the process of negotiation. The audience is not passive, they, however, construct their own identities through a media product. Through the process of 'pick and mix,' they are able to accept ideologies that suit them and neglect the others.  Les Revenants provides the niche target audience numerous chances to build their own identities -  allowing the audience moments to 'pick and mix' ideological perspectives'. Les revenants lack a definitive preferred reading, instead of asking the audience to construct their...

Les Revenants - Essay Question

What are the genre conventions of Les Revenants, how do they work, and how have they developed? Knee Jerk response:   Les Revenants demonstrates multiple genre conventions, it can be sorted into a variety of genres. The genre fluidity of Les Revenants allows the producers to combine and reshape conventions of multiple genres to form a single text. They have developed this through Steve Neale's theory of genre, through the process of repetition and difference. Plan:  the opening is in an isolated area, which has conventions to the supernatural genre. The location of the first shot is also the dam which is a key location. By having this at the start anchors the importance of the dam. The setting looks very french - makes Les revenants very atypical, never seen a horror set in the alps as opposed to Paris. The mise-en-scene of the causal costume is a binary opposition of the narrative and gives a sense of normality  Mainly 'Orchestral' music is an empathetic soun...

Les Revenants - Representation

Representation is the study of...   1.     The group, place or issue on which a media product is focusing. 2.     The media language the media product uses in order to present these groups or issues. 3.     The ideological perspective about the group or issue being created within the product. 4.     The impact of this ideological perspective on the target audience. Camille:  Young female teenager  Natural makeup look which suggests she is younger  Button up blue shirt with grey cardigan more of a conservative look, stereotypical 'good girl '.  Long Auburn hair suggests that she is young and free Pale, young, sheltered life which reflect death?  Complex representation, allows the audience to negotiate their own response ' Julie : Grey Jumper with white collard indicates she is intelligent  Hair partially tied up, a bit reserved Natural makeup she is comfortable in her own skin  Mid-twentie...

Les Revenants - first 5 mins

Conventions of the supernatural genre- opening in an isolated area. Costumes are causal attire which gives a strong sense of normality. The narrative the main character goes into a new environment/ setting in hope. Orchestral music empathetic sound to suit the fear of the character.  Tracking shot of Camille, as well as the high establishing shot of her, alienates her.  Slow-motion of butterfly breaking out of its case - connects a sense of mystery and drama - foreshadowing main plot point. As when the butterfly passes Mr Costa's wife there's a knock on the door.  Tracking shot of Camille - tragic head movement acts as a proairetic code signifies that she is looking for something close up shot connects as a sense of uncertainty- heightened sense of anxiety.  Tracking shots are slow paces (Mr costa house) moving through the house - creates tension and suspense - audience not knowing what to expect.  Camille on the bus connects a sense of cinema character who you ...
