The needle is a representation of the ideology of the media, and the the head is a representation of the a passive audience. The ideology goes to the audience's head without their consent.  Key Theory 16- George Gerbner- Cultivation Theory  the ideal prolonged and heavy exposure to "[tv]...cultivate", as in grows or develops in audiences "a view of the world consistent with the dominant or majority view expounded by television" Advantages/Disadvantages: the theory is outdated as it was in 1970s has a lot of element of truth in it  it is very simple  we don't agree what the media is showing he look...

Genre and Intertexuality

Genre is a type of Media Product. Generic Fluidity - the way in which genres change over time Genre isn't that helpful as it can be generalised like rap as more than one type. Sub-Genre are helpful as it can more specific. Hybrid genre is a mix of two genres. Genre is made up of generic paradigms , also known as genre conventions are accepts of media text (e.g editing, mise-en-scene, sound, etc) that demonstrate to the audience what genre a media product is. Iconography - the familiar signs of genre Key theory 3- Steve Neale - Theories around Genre:  Genre provides information for the audience, shortcut for producers to make film. To encode their own ideology. Helps to categorise things for society, so we can pin point things. Understand the world around, we can help identify stuff.   "Repetition  and Difference."

WaterAid and Postcolonial identities.

Image
Colonisation is the process of importing ones' culture and giving to another. Taking over another country. WaterAid Advert   We get satisfaction from donating to WaterAid, by helping someone else that's lesser than us. The mise-en-scene shows that Claudia is poorer than us because there isn't any cars/houses on the "road". Claudia's costumes aren't too rough however they aren't the best and she is wearing pumps and not barefoot. This advert positions us as a middle class British. We get satisfaction from donating. We get a sense of responsibility to help Africa. There is a Binary Oppression in this advert which creates division between 'us' and 'them'. Key Theory 11- Theories around Ethnicity and Post-colonial Theory- Paul Gilroy : Gilroy explored anxiety and uncertainty left in the UK following the death of colonialism. Even the British empire collapsed Gilroy argues we still uphold many subtle racial prejudices, which are id...

Stereotypes:          Stereotypes exists so society can make sense of the world, so we can have an idea of certain areas.  To allow certain people in the media to represent people.  We can use them to be hurtful towards people.  Stereotypes give us a sense of inclusiveness, allowing us to make friends.  Stereotypes are funny.  The purpose of Stereotypes is so we can generalise people in certain group.  An ordering process  A shortcut (for producer) A reference point (for audiences)  An expression of dominant societal values.   Stereotype is a fulfilling prophecy.
