Compared with the past, David Gauntlett argues that in the media today 'we are no longer get singular, straightforward messages about ideal types of male and female identities'  Evaluate the validity of this claim with reference to the set editions of Woman and Adbusters and the historical contexts in which they were produced.  PLAN  Knee Jerk; We no longer have one representation of the genders. This is shown through the contrasting difference between woman and adbusters.  set text  Breeze - soap advert  Faucet ad- second page  Woman : Laura Mauve - Male gaze- a hegemonically attractive - through the mise-en-scene of the costume - bubble foams. Flirtarious lexis that reinfornces the gender expections - Patriarchal Hegemony conventional for adverstising - selling a lifestyle or a beauty  The photo is occupying third of the page-  diverting the audience's attention to the women

Adbusters/ women

The ideologies of adbusters is that they're against the consumer culture and corporate advertising. Although they do use the internet as a catalyst, they believe that the hard-copy is the best version of a magazine. It's contradictory, as they are anti capitalism but the magazine itself it is pricey, retailing at 11.99.  Challenging ideology, to provoke the audience. Brand Identity - unpredictable, being anti-conventional. Adbusters subvert the conventions of a magazine by not including any advertising in the magazine. This is unconventional as most magazine rely on advertising for revenue.  The shocking content challenges the audience which is subversive. Which is contrasting to women's magazine which is in the audience's comfort range. Same interactions as a protest, the collective group against the corrupt society. It creates awareness for the audience. Threatening the audience with shocking mode of address - 'save the planet, kill yourself'. Women's arti...

This is America - Childish Gambino  Paul Gilroy- Postcolonial attitudes have constructed a racial hierarchy where White people are given more positive and important roles. For Instance, the police officers are white and in the background, there are people seen causing disturbance who are people of colour. The binary opposition paints the officers as good.  This reinforced through the camera movement. When the police cars are first introduced it is a tracking mid-shot of Gambino with it being right behind him. This attracts the audience's attention. Whereas the protesters are always shown in a wide shot.  The only ones being shot are black people and it is done without thought or hesitation which could an intertextual reference to how injust police brutality is.   As well as with the binary opposition of the police officers and the background characters who are protesting? the focus is more on the police officers as they have more of a grand entrance. And the pro...

The Weeknd- Blinding lights: Symbolism: Red - Love, Rage, danger, determination  Yellow- Joy, optimism, Enlightenment, Energy  Black- Death, evil, rebellion  Juxtaposition/Binary opposition between him being injured and dancing is unsettling and sinster. Positions the audience in an uncomfortable situation  The chaotic energy of the music video suggests/intimidates the effects of being on drugs. The blending of diegetic and non-diegetic sound reinforces this. The blending of the two sounds implies 'it's all a blur' and suggests that the character can hear both.  The character the Weeknd us playing can be a reference to the Joker. This is shown through this mannerism and his smile.  Has the typical conventions of a music video such as lip-syncing and dancing. It is both a performative and narrative video. However, it also subverts the conventions by not having the artist lip-sync but rather a smaller character.  This character is shown to be quite impo...

Target Audience - Perhaps younger teenagers/Kids (11-15yrs old) can infer this through the Lexis and Language they used in the video  Child Friendly, laugh at almost everything. There's no explicit language.   Inoffensive - cultivation character  Comments discuss the friendship they have aspirational  Insanely repetitive  Editing is simple- Icons of Pizza chains, simple editing - lots of jumpcuts  Stereotypically represented as feminine with her makeup and hair. She is presented as a perfect persona the video subtly produces a narrative about the lives they live from the products they consume and their buying habits such as Zoe "gets pizza like every week"   For comic effect, she chooses to leave in the blooper to make it more funny and interesting. Naturalistic tone  Her appearance is part of her brand - her own style naturalness and effortless however is trying  video is heavily constructed but is suppose to be natural  Loud ...

Intro - online media

Social media, online media and digitally convergent media have become more powerful than governments. Online media relies on engagement - encouraging user click-through and interaction to develop habits where the user will keep returning (e.g. Instagram). This is essential in maintaining profit and financial gain. Never being subject to traditional forms of regulation, Online Media presents a literally impossible to understand, hyperreal collage of news, fake news, ideology, hatred, advertising and videos of cats... There is no differentiation between these forms, leading to a form of hyper-convergence with no hope of differentiating between previously distinct forms of media. With no impediment to posting, extreme ideologies such as holocaust denial, pro-eating disorders, rape threats and images of abuse can be shared with relative impunity. And yet, the internet can potentially collect all human knowledge, can allow the sharing of artistic endeavours with positive...

Late Night Woman's Hour - Audience

How does this episode use lexis to appeal to its target audience? Analyse this episode's modes of address Stuart Hall suggests that audiences can negotiate the ideological perspective of any media product. What might the preferred and oppositional readings of this show be? Would you listen to this show? Explain your answer How could we apply Jenkins and Shirky's theories?  The topic itself - the discussion is based on make-up and from the perspective of a woman's experience- PATRIARCHAL - reflects a feminist ideology - the guests and panellists are educated and well-informed - the Alexis they use reflects that sophistication - target a middle-class audience. Could be argued women and men are presented in different ways - women described as 'busy'/ men watch porn trains and floss with their fingernails - reflects this a discussion that is based on a female perspective. Informal and relaxed - soft and calming - slow tone of voice - humourous - very chatty an...

Introduction to Woman's Hour

Who is the target audience for this programme?  (age, gender, socio-economic status etc.) How does it reach this target audience? (Consider guests, themes etc.) Why does the BBC broadcast this show?  I think the target audience for this radio show is mainly targeted at middle-aged women may be from the middle-class background.  The style is quite relaxed, it is flowy conservation.  Lots use of puns, 'world is on fire' Intellect and sophisticated language used this reflects an ideology that it is targeted on more of a mature audience  Widens their appeal by talking about the technology which targets a younger audience they directly state that they are middle class but I think it's with its tone and how it expects the audience to have the available income and education to be able to leave work early or spend money on hobbies and middle-aged due to family and kids Goes to one point to another which makes it feel natural  The topics are quite high-brow as in th...

Analysis of a chosen scene

Task  1. List the Media Language (mise-en-scene, editing, Cinematography etc.) that constructs meaning in the scene 2. Identify the preferred reading and the dominant ideology of the scene (e.g. 'a deliberately confusing and distressing ideology that positions the audience uncomfortably') 3. Identify the possible negotiated readings and oppositional reading- how is the audience being positioned?  Claire's reaction to Camille returning (11:45- 14:40) The scene starts with the frame focusing on the back of Claire's head, after seeing Camille in her house. This is a hermeneutic code as the audience are left to wonder what Claire's reaction is. The suspense is further anchored through the hallow unsettling music.  There are various moments within this scene where Claire changes her pace dramatically in seconds which may position the audience in an unnerving situation. As they feel alert and placed in a way through the cinematography as if they are there. Some of the sc...

Les Revenants - Audience

An audience is a group of people that consume a media product. Before it was thought that the audience was largely passive, they would accept the ideologies that the producer present to them. Now it is thought the audience are more opinionated. Stuart Hall says that there are three different 'types' of reading: The preferred reading, Negotiable reading, and the opposition reading.  Similar to what Stuart Hall speaks about, David Gauntlett talks about the process of negotiation. The audience is not passive, they, however, construct their own identities through a media product. Through the process of 'pick and mix,' they are able to accept ideologies that suit them and neglect the others.  Les Revenants provides the niche target audience numerous chances to build their own identities -  allowing the audience moments to 'pick and mix' ideological perspectives'. Les revenants lack a definitive preferred reading, instead of asking the audience to construct their...

Les Revenants - Essay Question

What are the genre conventions of Les Revenants, how do they work, and how have they developed? Knee Jerk response:   Les Revenants demonstrates multiple genre conventions, it can be sorted into a variety of genres. The genre fluidity of Les Revenants allows the producers to combine and reshape conventions of multiple genres to form a single text. They have developed this through Steve Neale's theory of genre, through the process of repetition and difference. Plan:  the opening is in an isolated area, which has conventions to the supernatural genre. The location of the first shot is also the dam which is a key location. By having this at the start anchors the importance of the dam. The setting looks very french - makes Les revenants very atypical, never seen a horror set in the alps as opposed to Paris. The mise-en-scene of the causal costume is a binary opposition of the narrative and gives a sense of normality  Mainly 'Orchestral' music is an empathetic soun...

Les Revenants - Representation

Representation is the study of...   1.     The group, place or issue on which a media product is focusing. 2.     The media language the media product uses in order to present these groups or issues. 3.     The ideological perspective about the group or issue being created within the product. 4.     The impact of this ideological perspective on the target audience. Camille:  Young female teenager  Natural makeup look which suggests she is younger  Button up blue shirt with grey cardigan more of a conservative look, stereotypical 'good girl '.  Long Auburn hair suggests that she is young and free Pale, young, sheltered life which reflect death?  Complex representation, allows the audience to negotiate their own response ' Julie : Grey Jumper with white collard indicates she is intelligent  Hair partially tied up, a bit reserved Natural makeup she is comfortable in her own skin  Mid-twentie...
